Alan is an etcher. He has a small studio in his back garden where he etches and prints zinc, aluminium and steel plates.
Because etching offers a wide range of techniques and processes – the option of hard or soft grounds, the marks made on the plate, the use of aquatint to provide tone, the choice of colour and paper – Alan believes the technique has an unlimited scope for providing variety and surprise.
When Alan first started printing his work was predominantly figurative but the latest prints have become more stylised and abstract, inspired by the marks made by prehistoric man on the rocks and landscape of the North York Moors and beyond. These prints also combine relief printing, which brings a splash of colour to the etched lines.
