Dereck Gauld

As well as being one of the founding members of York Printmakers, I am a member of the West Yorkshire Print Workshop and have exhibited prints in Scarborough Art Gallery, Pyramid Gallery York, Blossom Street Gallery York and other venues.  I like the loose feel of sugarlift to begin prints which I take from sketchbooks on walks around the country, especially North Yorkshire, the Lakes District and Cornwall.

I generally use soft ground etching for initial mark making and then build up tones from light grey to black through a process of aquatinting, which involves stopping out areas of the image and dropping into safe acid (leaving longer to create darker tones).

I will pull a black and white print after 3, 4 or 5 tone checks and sometimes add accented colour to the print plate to give another impression.  Colour will be added individually to each print, and prints are limited to 25, all printed onto high quality Somerset Satin printing paper.  I also have various linocut prints from sketches in the Lake District and Cornwall.

All prints are for sale and I can be contacted through the York Printmakers webpage or by email at derek.gauld@york.gov.uk
