Janice’s influences come from nature – plants, flowers, leaves and landscapes – items found in the garden, on walks along country paths and the edges of fields. She often works from observational drawings, photographs and directly from botanical material, but is also interested in pattern and colour and enjoys creating abstract work too. She enjoys working across a range of printmaking techniques such as etching, drypoint, collagraph and lino. Recently she has been enjoying the immediacy of monoprint techniques, particularly printing directly from nature, and using this to create collaged prints.
A few years ago she began creating artist’s books as an alternative way to display small prints and to re-purpose rejected prints, and found that she enjoyed working in this small scale format. Beginning with concertina books using monoprint and etching techniques, she moved on to creating explosion books as a way to create a printed object that is 3-dimensional, tactile and fun to handle. She now makes a variety of books including stitched and folded structures. Recently she has begun to incorporate vintage items into book making, including sewing bobbins and tin boxes.
