Madaleine Lockwood

Madelaine is a Yorkshire based artist specialising in drawing, textiles and relatively recently, printmaking. Her work is informed by the rural landscape, the environment and the natural world and aims to evoke a sense of the ‘specialness’ of a place: the local area around her home in the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors.

Through walking, sensing, close observation, collecting and mapping she analyses and records details of interest: lines, textures, shapes and patterns.  This information is translated into print by using a range of surfaces, tools and marks in order to make a personal response to a particular aspect of an environmental experience.  In particular she works in wood; engraving the end grain to ‘let in the light’ or cutting the plane to create a relief but also uses the collograph method of collage to create surfaces. She prints on to paper and cloth that may later be embellished with inks, oil, acrylic and stitch.
